About Your Guide
Joseph A. Garza, a Northern California native, discovered his lifelong passion for fishing as a young boy, casting lines in creeks alongside his grandparents. His journey with fishing took a significant turn when he moved to the scenic town of Paradise, CA, just before his teenage years. It was here, amidst the lush foothills and meandering waterways, that Joe’s love for fishing deepened.
As a youth, Joe’s dedication to the sport was evident. He would often embark on ambitious fifteen-mile bike rides, exploring the vast network of lakes, rivers, and creeks that dotted the landscape. His adventurous spirit and relentless curiosity about the natural world around him were the perfect companions on these solitary fishing expeditions.
2001 marked a pivotal year in Joe’s fishing journey. During a trip with friends, he was introduced to fly fishing, and it was love at first cast. Joe embraced fly fishing with his characteristic full-throttle enthusiasm, immersing himself in every aspect of the sport. He sought to master not just the techniques, but also the intricate knowledge of aquatic entomology, freshwater ecosystems, and the art of fly tying.
Joe’s passion for fly fishing and his natural talent for teaching converged in 2005 when he became the youth coordinator for a local fly fishing club. Over the next five and a half years, he dedicated himself to educating young anglers. Under his guidance, the program focused on the essentials of fly fishing, from casting and presentation to understanding the delicate balance of aquatic ecosystems. His efforts paid off spectacularly, turning the program into a nationally recognized initiative.
In 2011, Joe made the heartfelt decision to step away from the youth program to devote more time to his family, sharing his wealth of knowledge and love for fly fishing with his children. This family-focused period was a time of joy and sharing, as he passed on his skills and passion to the next generation.
2015 was another landmark year for Joe. Encouraged by a fellow guide and friend, he obtained his California Guide License, transforming his 43 years of fishing experience into a professional guiding career. Thus, J.A.G. Fly Fishing was born, marking the beginning of a new chapter in Joe’s life.
As a guide, Joe’s innate ability to teach and his endless patience have become his trademarks. He is not just a guide but a creator of lasting memories, meticulously teaching techniques that ensure his clients not only enjoy their current trip but also build skills for future successes. Joe’s greatest joy comes from watching his clients thrive and hearing about their independent fishing adventures.
Joe Garza is more than a skilled fisherman and guide; he is a man of character, a mentor, and a true joy to fish with. His journey from the creeks of Paradise, CA, to the founding of J.A.G. Fly Fishing is a testament to his dedication, skill, and love for the sport of fly fishing.
